The LS includes 16-inch steel wheels, OnStar, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, air-conditioning, an eight-way (manual) adjustable driver seat, a 60/40-split rear seat, a trip computer, full power accessories and a six-speaker stereo with a CD/MP3 player, satellite radio and an auxiliary audio jack. The LS Eco is optimized for maximum fuel efficiency with aerodynamic improvements, low-rolling-resistance tires and a version of the turbocharged engine.

The LT offers a turbocharged 1.4L inline-4 engine that produces 138 hp. The LT is actually comprised of 1LT and 2LT subsets. The 1LT comes with a turbocharged engine, chrome wheel covers, color-keyed power sideview mirrors, floor mats and a one-touch-up driver’s window. The 2LT adds alloy wheels, remote vehicle start, cruise control, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a six-way power driver seat, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, a USB/iPod port for the audio system and Bluetooth.

The Cruze LTZ also offers a turbocharged 1.4L inline-4 engine. The LTZ adds 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, illuminated vanity mirrors, rear park assist, a sport-tuned suspension and four-wheel disc brakes.

Many of the upper trims’ standard features can be had on lower trims via à la carte options or packages. A navigation system, a sunroof and an RS appearance package (unique front/rear fascias, foglights, rear spoiler) are all available on the upper trims.

Safety

All 2011 Chevrolet Cruze models have a notable 10 airbags. The Cruze comes with stability control, antilock brakes, full-length side curtain airbags, front knee airbags and front and rear side impact airbags as standard. All trims save the LTZ have a front-disc/rear-drum brake setup; the LTZ upgrades to four-wheel disc brakes.

2011 Chevy Volt Battery Warranty

After years of speculation, General Motors has finally announced the terms of the warranty on the Chevrolet Volt’s lithium ion battery pack; eight years/100,000 miles.

The 16 total kwh pack stores sufficient energy in a band from roughly 30% to 80% state-of-charge to propel the car for up to 40 miles at ambient temperature and with moderate driving style.

Since first working with the LG Chem lithium-manganese spinel cells in October 2007, GM has definitively proven their safe and robust nature. In these nearly three years of testing, GM has completed more than 1 million miles of driving and 4 million hours of validation of Volt battery packs, which include exactly nine modules and 288 cells.

“The Chevrolet Volt’s batteries have exceeded our performance targets and are ready to hit the road,” said Micky Bly, GM executive director, global electrical systems. “Our customers are making a commitment to technology that will help reduce our dependence on petroleum. In turn, we are making a commitment to our customers to deliver the highest standards for value, safety, quality, performance and reliability for an unprecedented eight years/100,000 miles.”

GM stresses the following key features of the Volt’s battery that allow this unprecedented in the industry warranty:

Thermal Management: the intrinsic thermal management system allows the pack and car to operate flawlessly from -13 degrees Fahrenheit (-25 C) and as high as 122 degrees Fahrenheit (+50 C). In cold weather the cells are warmed by the generator and in warm weather they are chilled.

Diagnostics: there are more than 500 diagnostic tests on the pack that run 10 times per second. 85 percent ensure the pack is operating safely, 15 percent ensure durability.

Cell design: the LG chemistry ensures high power and long life.

Energy Management: by not fully charging or discharging the battery ensures the longest possible life.

GM is on track to deliver the Volt to customers later this year.

“We’re moving fast to deliver for the customer and ensure the Volt launch stays on track,” said Nancy Laubenthal, plant manager of the Brownstown Battery Plant. “Last August we announced the investment in the Brownstown facility and in January built our first completed battery pack. Now we are finishing pre-production batteries and soon we will begin building production batteries for Chevrolet Volts that will be delivered to dealers before the end of the year.”

General Motors announced in the beginning of the month that due to strong public interest in the car, they would be increasing U.S. production of the car by 50 percent in 2012.  They had planned to produce 30,000 vehicles and will now produce 45,000.

Since the announcement of the Chevy Volt, each additional detail released has added consumer interest.  Chevy recently released a few facts that make this car the only car of its kind.  The Volt has a total driving range of about 340 miles and is powered by electricity at all times, making it unlike any other car.  For up to the first 40 miles, the length of a typical commute, the vehicle drives gas- and tailpipe-emissions-free using electricity from its battery.  When the Volt’s battery runs low, a gas-powered, engine/generator operates to extend the driving range another 300 miles on a full tank.

“The Chevrolet Volt provides drivers with the latest technology, outstanding innovation, and something no other electric vehicle can provide – peace of mind,” said Edward E. Whitacre, Jr., GM Chairman and CEO.

Chevy dealers began taking customer orders for the Volt in the beginning of the month and have found that more than 25,000 people have joined the Chevrolet Volt enthusiast in recent weeks due to the increase in attention that the car is receiving.  The car was originally planned to launch initially in just three U.S. markets, but due to consumer interest, has been raised to seven markets.

The car will not only be great for the environment, but its production is good for the economy.  Production of the Volt has increased employment for both Chevy and additional suppliers.  The car’s batter cell supplier LG Chem/Compact Power Inc. added 400 jobs to aid in production just this month.

Chevy Volt, the most anticipated car of 2011, had a special test driver. Earlier in the week, President Obama visited the General Motors plant and took it for a spin.

This was only the second car the president has driven since 2007 and upon getting out, was quick to describe the car as “pretty smooth.”

The Volt, with a fully charged battery, can run for up to 40 miles using no gasoline and producing no tailpipe emissions. Once the battery is out, the internal combustion engine (ICE) starts up to begin power generation. Once the power generation begins, tail-pipe exhaust emissions will be similar to other 4-cylinder low displacement gasoline-powered automobiles.

In addition to being a great green car, the Volt offers features of popular luxury vehicles. These features include: a 7? Over the course of the four days, the Volt  will stop in Little Rock, AR on July 1; Nashville, TN and Roanoke, VA on July 2; Washington, D.C. and Frederick, MD on July 3; Philadelphia, PA and finally, New York City on July 4.

The “Freedom Drive” will demonstrate Chevrolet Volt’s unique capability of driving approximately 40 miles as a pure electric vehicle, with a total driving range of 340 miles, with electricity powering the car at all times and speeds.  For trips of up to 40 miles, the Volt gets it power solely from electricity stored in its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery.  When the Volt’s battery runs low, a sophisticated engine-generator seamlessly engages to extend the driving range to about 300 miles on a full tank of gas.

The Chevy Volt will connect to a Blackberry or iPhone apps, one of the apps enabling the driver to set the car to charge. If the driver uses their phone to program their car to charge after midnight, they’ll be able to take advantage of lower utility rates.

Plus, drivers can access these electricity rates from the connected OnStar system.The Chevy Volt may just be the smartest fuel efficient vehicle yet.

GM has yet to spill the beans all the Blackberry and iPhone apps that you’ll be able to connect to your Chevy Volt with, but hinted at that the technology at the LA Auto Show. The hint was dropped when Brent Dewar, VP of Chevrolet, presented the Volt at the LA Auto Show he revealed a slide that showed a driver interacting with the Volt with a Blackberry.
